The word ‘Ugly’ might sound like the worst form of insult to most people but for Masvinu William, the story is totally different as he takes pride in being ugly, a virtue that has won for him some thousands of US Dollars.
The 43-year-old unemployed man was crowned the winner of Mr. Ugly Zimbabwe 2017, a title he had previously won in 2012 and defended for the subsequent two years before being overthrown by a controversial defeat to Mison Sere.
William won a cash prize of $500 and a cow for winning the title while the first runner up and second runner-up were given $200 and $100 respectively.
An excited William Masvinu said ” “No one can dispute that I am the ugliest person in Zimbabwe. It was a tight competition since all the contestants were potential winners. Last time, complacency cost me a lot but this time I came well prepared for the contest and I am happy I have reclaimed my trophy’, adding that, I am proud of my ugliness as I was born ugly.’’
“I now want to take my ugliness outside the country. If there is Mr. Ugly World, I am confident I will bring the crown to Zimbabwe,”.
Musekiwa who came second promised to work hard next year win the crown from Masvinu.
“I will be working hard on my looks and the way I present myself, come next year I am going to take over the crown,” he said.
Mr. Ugly Zimbabwe was instituted in 2010 to appreciate the greatness in being Ugly. The event has been held annually since its inception except for last year’s edition which couldn’t hold due to controversies surrounding the 2015 winner.
William Masvinu would represent Zimbabwe at the inaugural edition of Mr. Ugly Africa to be held in South Africa next year.
