The 2017 edition of the Ghana Writers’ Awards was held at the Christ The King Parish – Accra on Saturday, October 28, 2017.

The event which is the second edition of the prestigious awards was attended by nominees, kindred of nominees, guests from various media houses, friends of literature and a profusion of the general public. The occasion chaired by the aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (N.P.P), Mr. Andy Kankam was built on the theme: “My art my life; creating more opportunities for the youth in the literary art industry in Ghana.”

The Guest Speaker, Mr. Edmund Yeboah, the newly elected National General Secretary for the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) noted during his speech that there is a gradual decline in the literary space in Ghana and that if care is not taken; we would lose the art of writing altogether. He further promised to use his position to associate the GWA with GJA so as to make it a bigger and better event in the coming years.

Mr. Andy Kankam, an aspirant for the National Chairmanship position of the New Patriotic Party also stressed the need for writers to tell the African story the way it is rather than writing about the foreign world. He also promised his support for the event and mentioned that he would ensure that Government comes on board to support the initiative.

The President of the Ghana Writers’ Awards, Mr. Kwame Zadok Gyasi on his part made a call to the general public to support the event which is aimed at restoring Ghana’s pride acquired over the years in writing. According to Mr. Zadok, the event which is in its second year has yet to be sponsored by any big brand financially thereby leaving the burden on the organisers alone.

The Ghana Writers’ Awards is an annual award instituted in 2012 by some dedicated lovers of literature to celebrate deserving writers in Ghana. This year’s edition saw over 400 entries for the four categories namely poetry, short story, topic-given poetry and Literature blog. Out of the number who submitted their works, only twenty-four were shortlisted through the efforts of the 10 judges selected across 3 continents.

Certificates were awarded to all shortlisted entrants and the four grand winners were given citations, an African-print bag, a 4GB Pen drive and a copy of a book titled ‘It is Cold ooo’. Some individuals and companies were also awarded citations for their efforts made to promote the Literature in Ghana. They included The Spectator, Writer’s Haven on Class FM and Ideal Finance among others.

The crowd was treated to the very best of Spoken Words by some talented Ghanaian Poets such as Ancestral Poet, Ink Weaver, Koo Kumi, Sabukie, Abotreh and Kweku Dallah. Fast rising musician, Kyd Nezer also gave the crowd a feel of his ‘Logoligi’ on the memorable night.
